Hawaiian Tropic

I worked with Film Punks to create a massive series of 3D animations for Hawaiian Tropic:

This was a mammoth task as there were no 3D CAD models that could be supplied to us. So, the only alternative was to create each product entirely from scratch. We didn't have full CAD drawings for everything, so it was a challenge to get the dimensions and scale correct.

I personally produced everything seen, apart from the ‘liquid ribbon’ shot at 9 seconds in the above video, and the outro text animation along with the textured backgrounds.

We were given the physical products to use as reference, so being able to hold the actual products was helpful. Photos and measurements were taken of them and from there the 3D geometry was built accurately for each. Clay renders of the models can be seen here:

Once the models were made, it was then time to proceed with the process of texturing them. We were given the labels in vector format, and so it was just a question of UVW unwrapping the models where needed, and projecting the details onto the models using additional methods. Getting the colours and texture right for some of the products was tricky. The products that involved a cream in a semi-translucent bottle for example, which had the detail of two separate but mixed solutions, created a ‘ribbon’ effect within the bottle. It was interesting to replicate this. Ultimately subsurface scatting on the bottle’s outer geometry helped to solve this. So that the ‘ribbon’ colours (of cream and yellow, or light and dark blue depending on the product) could be seen vaguely enough, matching the real-life bottle quite closely. The models fully textured can be seen here:

Here are a few stills that were made, framing some of the products with CG versions of their respective contents i.e. lotion, cream, powder or lip balm next to them:

With the texturing complete, it was then time to move onto animating each product. This took a fair amount of effort as there were many products to get through; each needing refinement and feedback. They can be seen here:

The ‘Ingredients’ standalone sections were also made using 3D stock elements of coconut, fruits etc. which are in the product:

This 'Family' animation was also made to highlight the new product styles and rebrand. It was rendered at 60fps which makes it smooth visually. This 60fps choice was mainly to fix a left to right pan of products at the end, which had a jitter at lower framerates:
